I saw a beautiful partial rainbow in the sky over the parking lot as I drove to work today. It lasted only for about a minute but I was glad to be able to get a quick shot as I got out of the car. I also managed to get a shot with my trusty Panasonic GX-1 too here
A belated extension of my old blog buT iS iT aRt? that I stopped posting to over 3000 days ago... and containing quick images from my cell phone only.

A sad day today as we attended the memorial for a local artist, who taught my wife. On our way home we passed her house and I took this shot of her gateway, cut from metal sheeting by her partner and symbolizing her other passion, her animals. Very touching.

Over at the Meadow at Longwood Gardens they have installed over 180 birdhouses. I really liked these ones, which remind me of the hats that nuns wear, for some reason?!

31 - the aRt oF pLaNniNg (or not)
The view from my office window. Note the break in the safety barrier, the gate and the position of the tree. I can only assume this was done as as part of an artistic statement by the landscapers! Incidentally, if you were to go through the gate it's about a 60' tumble down a rocky cliff face into the quarry!

Mechanical bEaSt at 30
I caught sight of the yellow-streaked back hoe today, skulking through the wooded area atop the reclaimed quarry next to our office. It was difficult to see at first but with patience I was able to get a quick shot of it as it slowly devoured a few trees, like some voracious ironclad dinosaur. I can only assume that this landscape is now deemed ripe for development and we will shortly have a multitude of glass-fronted office buildings looking down on us. That's progress.

29 - BaNal aRt
We have had several "right-sizing opportunities" over recent years, or what we always used to call layoffs, and this has recently resulted in emptying offices and cubes and collection materials in the copy room. There is a certain irony on seeing several corporate baubles among the usual work-related ephemera. One that really struck me was this star award. The fact that it was chipped speaks volumes. Was it damaged in an act of anger or perhaps as a dramatic statement?

Today was officially the first day of fall and I couldn't help but capture this shot of a tree whose leaves are just starting to turn yellow despite the bright "Stop" sign underneath. That's kind of how I feel as the season gets cooler...

Walking up the stairs to play catch with the dog in the hallway and this little rainbow caught my eye. The evening sun refracting on the kitchen window. It lasted only for a very short period colorfully illustrating how transient beauty can be.

25 - The aRt of lOggiNg
Today we had a 100 foot tall oak tree felled as it was dead, and although unlikely to fall was certainly going to lose branches in the winter snow. We ended up with a lot of lumber. It may just look like a pile of wood at the moment but we are getting our thinking caps on to see what we can do with some of it artistically. Rustic table and chairs maybe. Who knows...

23 - Open to all comers
Saw this sign on the door at our local High School during orientation and I have to ask what on earth goes on here? I am not going to comment on the relative merits of wrestling as a sport, having been brought up with the circus-like antics in the 70's, but calling it a dance may be talking it a bit too far :-)

New carpeting at work, when looked at closely resembles a tiny urban landscape... but where are the cars?

N,n,n,n,n,19...
(Blog title with apologies to Paul Hardcastle)
It's odd what you miss sometimes. We had the driveway resurfaced a few weeks ago and I have cleaned around the place several times with the blower yet it was only today, when coming in with the dogs, that I spotted the tracks from our cat who must have padded through the still wet coating and left his mark.
It does add a certain style to the place. He certainly left his mark!

Up at the school today I couldn't help but notice this lovely metal Eiffel Tower. I wonder about these knickknacks and how they are designed, manufactured and shipped all over the globe. This one has a certain art deco style about it.

Day 16 - fX
I had a very long all day meeting today but managed to have a short breather at lunchtime and get this shot of the great retro sofas in the building foyer. Applying one of the Camera+ effects on the photo gave an interesting output, bUt iSiT aRt?
I also couldn't resist using the fisheye lens on our little Fiat 500. It makes the car look even more quirky than it actually is!

While cleaning out my camera bag in the back of the car this morning I rediscovered my cheap fisheye lens for my iPhone. I had purchased this on a whim earlier in the year with 2 other lenses for under $10 including shipping and hadn't really used it much so I took it into the office for a couple of contrived shots to see how it performs.
I think I will carry this a little more often as it could be used to good effect on even a very mundane object or scene, as shown above.

One of the great things about always carrying a camera (iPhone) is the ability for those quick shots when something catches my eye or makes me smile. This is an example of the latter, spotted when collecting my daughter from band practice.

Day 13
The wheel of Mother nature keeps on turning and this year produced some really lovely little gourds from some opportunistic plants in our garden. I love the symmetry and bright colors.

I love to be able to see the stars, but that is a rarity these days with all the light pollution form human habitation. A nice alternative is the night sky when the moon is bright. Add in a field of slow moving clouds to brush past the lunar light and the view is quite awe inspiring.

It is strange how we take many things for granted around us. For example, the wooden poles that support the electrical cables from PECO, which are individually numbered and also carry tags appear to identify when each pole has been treated and retreated with some sort of preservative/insecticide. There's a certain rustic charm associated with these embossed plaques, which makes them seem arcane in these days of barcoding and QR codes, buT iS iT aRt?

dAy 9: aN App a dAy
Today I was able to do something that would have been unimaginable when I started my original blog buT iS iT aRt? back in 2005, namely use a phone app to directly post to blogger. I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier. Anyhow, today I was able to escape the office at lunchtime and get some exercise at a nearby park. During my stroll I captured (as best I could on my Phone) an early Autumn leaf floating downstream.
Thankfully I also had my camera with me and was able to take a fairly decent shot of a floating leaf too!

Great storm tonight that lasted almost an hour, with thunder and lightning. I tried to capture a few shots with my iPhone but mostly the amount of light flooded the sensor. I was happy to get just a few to illustrate the truly spectacular electrical dance that was going on above my head. Some of these strikes must have come to earth with spectacular results...

Oh the lovely supermarket! This time my local, family owned Wegman's where they have, hidden atop the ice cream freezers, a full size replica of the Liberty Bell.
